Most Searched Jeans of 2012

It shouldn't really come as a surprise that the most searched-for fashion item on Yahoo! in 2012 was jeans. A girl's wardrobe certainly isn't complete without her trusty denim (don't lie--you know you live in them), so we've rounded up the most sought after styles and brands from this year.

Levi's - The first maker of blue jeans are (thankfully) still at it! The brand founded in 1873 has been consistently cranking out classics for well over 100 years--everyone from Barack Obama to Miley Cyrus
has a pair. We love them for their well-constructed skinnies.

Lucky Brand - Aren't you a Lucky girl if you own a pair of these? This designer rarely misses a step, and has completely mastered the art of the perfectly faded bootleg, so we’re not shocked that they are one of the most successful brands year after year.

Lee Jeans - Another heritage brand (like Levi's, it's been around since the 19th century), these blue jeans classics rely on quality construction and fit, but it's their reasonable pricing that has us coming back to them time and time again.

Unwanted guest in Florida picnic area is a 17-foot Burmese python

If visitors to a South Florida picnic area were bothered by ants, those worries surely passed the moment a 17-foot Burmese python slithered onto the grounds. The enormous snake was shot and killed after the sighting, by a family visiting from Arkansas, and the raw footage was supplied to CNN.

At 17 feet, the python was just shy of the Florida record: a 17-foot, 7-inch specimen captured last year.

The python hunt referred to in the CNN report is the "2013 Python Challenge," a month-long hunt that kicks off Jan. 12. The inaugural program, in which hunters armed with firearms and machetes will kill as many pythons as they can, is an attempt to dent the population of the invasive reptiles, which threaten native wildlife.

Burmese pythons, which prey on small mammals, birds, and even small alligators, are prolific breeders and prevalent throughout the Everglades. They're believed to have been introduced to Florida, initially, by pet owners who turned the snakes loose when they outgrew their pens.

Burmese pythons can no longer be acquired as pets in Florida, and it's illegal to transport the reptiles across state lines.

The Scariest Shoes Of All Time

We've come across many ugly shoes in our day, but a pair dubbed "Scary Beautiful" is definitely the most treacherous footwear we've ever seen. The massive heels appear backwards on the foot, so the wearers feet point straight down the back, as if in ballet shoes, with their shin leaning against the front "heel" end of the design to balance. The shoes are a collaboration between artist Leanie van der Vyver and Dutch shoe designer René van den Berg, and serve as a commentary on today's impossible standards of beauty.

The ugliest shoes of all time

Van der Vyver is South African, and recently graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. We spotted "Scary Beautiful" on her website, cargocollective.com, and reached out to her for the inside scoop.

Imelda Marcos' prized shoe collection is ruined

"After working in fashion for seven years, and therefore being well aware of the manipulation images in fashion suffer for a perfect result, I still compare myself to them and other current beauty ideals," Van der Vyver told Yahoo! Shine exclusively. "My frustration with my own inability to overcome these feelings of inadequacy was what brought 'Scary Beautiful' into fruition. The shoes formed part of my graduation project that was a result of my thesis. The conclusion of my thesis investigation was that people are not satisfied with what they look like, and that perfection, according to the beauty and fashion standards, has reached a climax. Humans are playing God by physically and metaphorically perfecting themselves. Beauty is currently at an all time climax, allowing this project to explore what lies beyond perfection. Scary Beautiful challenges current beauty ideals by inflicting an unexpected new beauty standard."

Unsurprisingly, Van der Vyver's "Scary Beautiful" shoes were nominated for a design prize at Gerrit Rietveld Academie. Jury members Barbara Visser, visual artist and Xander Karskens, and curator of De Hallen had this to say about the shoes:

"The object created by Leanie expands the concept of a shoe into multiple new meanings. The beautifully made leather object is accompanied by a video registration of a girl wearing it. One observes the design forcing the wearer to develop a new way of walking, leaning forward while refining a painfully fragile balance. The jury applauds the way aesthetics, ergonomics and prosthesis merge into an awkward choreography. The craftsmanship and strong conceptual way of designing also show in another work, a ceramic tea set in which reference is made to a building in South Africa. Leanie succeeds in translating political consciousness into form and is considered by the jury to be a meaningful future designer."

Alexander McQueen's spring 2010 Armadillo heels. Photo by Antonio de Moraes Barros Filho/Getty Images
We find the clip shocking but also oddly moving. The shoes are obviously not practical, but as art they're intriguing. We can't help but be reminded of Lady Gaga trying to steady herself in the now-famous Alexander McQueen "Armadillo" heels in her "Bad Romance" music video. Major models like Abbey Lee Kershaw, Natasha Poly, and Sasha Pivovarova reportedly refused to wear the 12-inch McQueen heels out of fear, and were cut from the designer's spring 2010 fashion show. In comparison, the "Scary Beautiful" shoes make the "Armadillo" heels look like sneakers, but we had a feeling the always-outdoing-herself Lady Gaga would give them a spin one day. Sure enough, Van der Vyver confirmed our suspicions.

"Yes, on request I did actually send them to Studio Formichetti for a Lady Gaga music video, but I could not get confirmation whether she actually used them," Van der Vyver told us. "I did not charge for her to possibly use them. I would love to sell them to a gallery."

We're holding out for the "Scary Beautiful" shoes to appear in an upcoming Lady Gaga music video, but until then Van der Vyver is back home in Cape Town starting her own studio where she'll continue investigating fashion and beauty. We're anticipating her next creation.

Pop star Rihanna donates $1.75m to a hospital in Barbados

BBC — Pop star Rihanna has donated $1.75m (£1.08m) to a hospital in Barbados in memory of her grandmother.
The 24-year-old said the gift, which will pay for three pieces of medical equipment, was her way “giving back to Barbados”.
“I believe that this will have a huge impact on the people of Barbados. This was all done to save lives or at least extend them.”
The singer's grandmother, Clara “Dolly” Braithwaite, died in June.
She had fought a long battle with cancer.
The hospital's radiotherapy unit has been renamed the Clara Braithwaite Center for Oncology and Nuclear Medicine.
Rihanna, whose real name is Robyn Fenty, made the announcement at a visit to the hospital over the weekend, where she was accompanied by her mother, Monica, and grandfather, Lionel Braithwaite.
She was particularly close to her grandmother, and took a last-minute break from her European festival tour in June to spend some time with her in hospital.
When she died on 30 June, the pop star took to Twitter and posted several photographs of the two together, writing, “my heart smiled and cried all at once”.
Born and raised in Barbados, Rihanna is one of the most successful female musicians in the world.
Since her debut in 2005, she has released an album a year, with the exception of 2008.
Her most recent, Unapologetic, became her first US number one, and gave her a global hit with the lead single, Diamonds.
Forbes magazine last week named her the third-highest-earning woman in the music industry, after she made $53m in 2012.

Connecticut school shooting by a gunman leaves 20 children and 6 adults killed

BBC — A gunman has killed 20 children and six adults at a primary school in the US state of Connecticut, police say.
The gunman, who also died, has not been formally identified by police.
But officials told US media that the killer at Sandy Hook Elementary School, in Newtown, was a 20-year-old son of a teacher. He is thought to have killed her before the attack.
It is one of the worst-ever US school shootings, with a toll close to the 32 who died at Virginia Tech in 2007.
Early reports named 24-year-old Ryan Lanza as the gunman, but anonymous officials later said his brother Adam, 20, was the suspect.
He is believed to have killed their mother, Nancy Lanza, at her home before heading to Sandy Hook school. Investigators say it is unclear whether she worked there.
Ryan Lanza of Hoboken, New Jersey, was being questioned by police, US media reported, but has not been named as a suspect.
'Safest place in America'
Police Lt Paul Vance said 18 children were pronounced dead at the school, and two died after being taken to hospital. Six adults were also killed, and the gunman died at the scene, apparently after shooting himself.
One person was also injured, and police were investigating a second crime scene in Newtown, where another victim was found dead – understood to be the gunman's mother.
Dressed in black and wearing a bullet-proof vest, the gunman is thought to have had several weapons.
These included two handguns – a Glock and a Sig Sauer – and a .223-calibre rifle, reports said.
The killings took place in two rooms within a single section of the school, police have said.
One parent, Stephen Delgiadice, whose eight-year-old daughter was at Sandy Hook School on Friday but was not harmed, said the shooting was traumatic for the small town.
“It's alarming, especially in Newtown, Connecticut, which we always thought was the safest place in America,” Mr Delgiadice told AP.
At a memorial service in Newtown people crowded outside the doors of the church as Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy addressed those gathered.
He called the attack a “tragedy of unspeakable terms”, saying “you can never be prepared” for an event like this.
In Washington, about 200 people held a candlelight vigil for the victims outside the White House, whilst others protested there to call for gun controls.
'Innocence torn away'
Friday's shooting is the third major gun attack in the US in 2012.
In July an attacker killed 12 people at a premiere of a Batman film in Aurora, Colorado. In August six people died at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin.
Just this week two people died in a shooting at a shopping mall in the state of Oregon.
At the White House, an emotional President Barack Obama cited those incidents as he called for “meaningful action… regardless of politics”.
“Our hearts are broken today, for the parents, grandparents, sisters and brothers of these children, and for the families of the adults who were lost.”
Mr Obama offered condolences to the families of survivors too, saying “their children's innocence has been torn away from them too early, and there are no words that will ease their pain”.
He wiped tears from his eyes as he spoke of the “overwhelming grief” at the loss of life.
The American flags on Capitol Hill were lowered to half-mast in the wake of the attack.
Schools locked down
Police arrived at the school soon after 09:40 local time (14:40 GMT) on Friday, answering reports that a gunman was in the school's main office and one person had “numerous gunshot wounds”.
Witnesses reported hearing scores of shots fired, with one suggesting there “must have been 100 rounds” in an interview with CNN.
Parent Richard Wilford said his seven-year-old son Richie described a noise that “sounded like what he described as cans falling”.
Mr Wilford said his son's teacher locked the classroom door and told the children to huddle in a corner until the police arrived.
The authorities said they mobilised “every possible asset” in their response to the shooting. Teams of officers, some with dogs, combed the school and evacuated the building.
Firefighters reportedly told children to close their eyes and run past the school's office as they left the building.
Sandy Hook School – described by correspondents as a highly rated school has more than 600 students – spanning the ages five to 10.
Witness Mergim Bajraliu, 17, said he heard the gunshots ring out from his home and ran to the school looking for his nine-year-old sister, who was not hurt.
He spoke of an emotional scene at the school as anguished parents rushed to find their children.
“Everyone was just traumatised,” he said.

Study: Smoking While Drinking Increases Hangover Symptoms

(UPI) — A study of college students found those who smoked while drinking were more likely to report hangover symptoms after heavy drinking, U.S. researchers say.
The study, scheduled to be published in the January issue of the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs, also found about one-quarter of people who drink enough to spur a hangover in most didn't actually develop one, and while no one is sure what that is, the study suggests smoking may be a factor.
“At the same number of drinks, people who smoked more that day were more likely to have a hangover and have more intense hangovers,” Damaris J. Rohsenow, of the Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies at Brown University in Providence, R.I., said in a statement.
The findings were based on a survey of 113 college students who recorded their drinking and smoking habits, and any hangover symptoms, every day for eight weeks.
The study found overall when students drank heavily — the equivalent of five or six cans of beer in about an hour — those who'd smoked more on that same day had higher odds of suffering a hangover the next morning and suffered more when they did.
The findings suggested if smokers plan to indulge in heavy alcohol use, it would be wise to cut down on cigarettes, Rohsenow said.

Tips to spend Happy Christmas with the family

Buy Safe Toys

If you plan to buy toys for the kids in your life, choose age-appropriate toys and look for labels with safety advice. For young children, avoid toys with small parts, sharp edges, and electric toys that can heat up. Always purchase safety gear in addition to sports-related gifts or ride-on toys, such as bicycles or skateboards.

Celebrate on a Budget

The holidays can be expensive, but you don't have to break the bank to celebrate. Take a few minutes to decide how much you can afford to spend on gifts, travel, parties, decorations, and other holiday expenses. Once you've created a spending plan, keep track of your purchases.
Shopping online can help you stick to a budget as you'll avoid the temptation of store displays and may be able to use coupons and promotion codes. Before you buy, look for free shipping offers; check ordering deadlines to ensure that your gifts will arrive on time; and read the return policy.
Give the Gift of Service

Sometimes the greatest gift you can give to others is service. Studies show that reading to a child just three hours a week significantly improves his or her reading skills. If you help out at a local soup kitchen or food bank, you are directly providing meals to hungry individuals.

Find Seasonal Employment

Even in a tough economy, businesses need extra help around the holidays. Seasonal employment can help supplement your income and potentially lead to a permanent position. If you need to update your resume, check out resume and interview tips to help you stand out in the job market. Get online tools and resources to help with your job search.

Get Through the Holiday Blues

The holidays aren't joyous for everyone. This time of year can bring stress and feelings of loneliness. Exercise, focusing on positive relationships, and doing things that you find rewarding can help with depression. Get tips on what to do if you feel depressed. Keep in mind that winter depression could be a sign of seasonal affective disorder (SAD), which may be caused by the lack of sunlight. Treatment for SAD is much like other forms of depression, but also involves light therapy.

Be Safe and Save Money with LED Lights

Electricity bills can grow during the holidays if you decorate with strings of lights. Consider switching to LED (light-emitting diode) holiday lights to save energy and money. In addition to the energy and cost savings, LED lights are much cooler than incandescent bulbs, reducing the risk of fires.
Every holiday season, fires claim lives and cost millions in damage. To prevent holiday fires in your home, use nonflammable decorations; do not overload electrical sockets; regularly water Christmas trees; and avoid the use of lit candles. As you should do year-round, ensure that your smoke alarms are working.

Pay Attention to Food Portions and Physical Activity

The holidays are a wonderful time to celebrate with family and friends, but celebrations sometimes involve over-indulging in sweet treats and heavy foods. Even if you only gain one or two pounds during the holidays, these gains can add up over the years. The holidays are probably not the ideal time to try to lose weight, but you can take steps to maintain your weight.

Pack for Hassle-Free Air Travel

You can get through the airport security line faster by traveling with unwrapped gifts and following the “3-1-1 rule” when carrying on liquids. You may have favorite liquid food items (like cranberry sauce or special dips) that you want to share during the holidays, but it's best to put such items in your checked bag or ship them ahead of time. If you need last-minute information about what you can and can't bring through security, use the My TSA app or mobile website. Get more helpful hints for holiday travelers.

Reduce Holiday Waste

The holiday season includes many opportunities to reduce waste, recycle, and reuse items. Did you know that about 40 percent of all battery sales occur during the holiday season? Consider buying rechargeable batteries (and a charger) for electronic gifts to help reduce the amount of harmful materials thrown away. After the holidays, look for ways to recycle your tree instead of sending it to a landfill. If you plan to send greeting cards, consider purchasing ones that are made of recycled paper or sending electronic greetings.

Keep Food Safe

Holiday buffets are convenient ways to entertain a crowd, but leaving food out for long periods of time can invite bacteria that cause foodborne illness. To keep your holiday foods safe, cook them thoroughly; use shallow containers; never leave them sitting out for more than two hours; and keep them at the appropriate temperature. Get more food safety tips to help keep your guests healthy.

Ideas for Kids for New Year 2013

Funky Noisemakers

Kids love making noise at midnight. Let them design a custom noisemaker using everyday objects. For the noisemaker container, use empty plastic food jars, or simply glue the open ends of two cups together. Easier yet, fold a paper plate in half and staple the edges shut. Fill the inside with dry beans or rice, uncooked corn kernels or even small jingle bells. Let kids decorate the outside of the container with glitter, sparkly pens, stick-on jewels, feathers and sequins.

Sparkly Fireworks

Do this project after children have seen a real fireworks show. Give them each a black piece of construction paper or poster board. Open the tip of a glue bottle very slightly and let them draw their own fireworks with the glue. Tell them to try to remember the different types of fireworks they saw during the show. Sprinkle the glue with different colors of glitter, and shake off the excess. After the glue has dried, you can cut out the fireworks and tape them to a long piece of ribbon to make a decorative streamer.

Custom Calendar

Let older children decorate a calendar that they can use for the upcoming year. Buy or make a blank calendar. Write in the dates yourself or let children do it, ensuring they note important holidays and birthdays. Supply kids with photographs of themselves and family as well as scrapbooking paper and embellishments. This is a great way to use any unwanted scrapbooking materials left over at the end of the year. Teach children how to theme each page for the month. You can also teach children about coordinating and contrasting colors and other art concepts.

Handprint Poster

This art project also serves as a memento for parents. Give the child a sheet of sturdy poster board. With a foam brush, let the child paint one hand with glittery washable paint. Silver and gold are colors appropriate for the New Year. Have the child make four hand prints in a row on the paper. With glitter glue, let the child write the new year numbers across the hands, one number on each palm. Above the hand prints, write “Happy New Year” with glitter glue and let children decorate the poster with shiny stickers.
